Our home in London
The Hurtado Jesuit CentreJRS-UK is based at the Hurtado Jesuit Centre in Wapping, London, with our administrative offices, our coordinating base for our work in detention centres and our current weekly Day Centre. The centre also offers the potential to develop new services and outreach to refugees, alongside other Jesuit projects, including an East End branch of the successful London Jesuit Volunteers and an inter-faith initiative.

About Alberto Hurtado

“A fire that kindles other fires…” are words ascribed to the Chilean Saint, Alberto Hurtado. His name has been given to the new Hurtado Jesuit Centre in Wapping which provides JRS-UK with a new home.
As a Jesuit priest, lawyer, community organiser, writer and founder of Hogar de Christo, Alberto Hurtado reached a wide and diverse audience. His compassionate love of the poor inspired him to house the homeless and dispossessed and to campaign in Chile for a change in structures and attitudes that excluded them from political and civic participation. He practiced a faith that does justice and inspired others to do the same. In this way, he was indeed a bright flame that kindled others to work for justice. Alberto’s vision of service, accompaniment and advocacy for and with people on the margins of society is a vision which today inspires many to work with the Jesuit Refugee Service in the UK and beyond.
