“…anyone who wants to be great among you must be your servant, and anyone who wants to be first among you must be your slave, just as the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve”
Over the weeks of Lent, we are introducing you to a number of the refugee friends JRS accompanies. We invite you to walk with them and serve alongside them.
How will you serve God today?
Mourad’s Story – Part 4
After his asylum application was refused, Mourad was street homeless for nearly four years. He describes this period of his life as feeling ‘hopeless’, but continuing on.
“I feel very bad [when I was on the streets], because you don’t have anything, everyday, you live out of bag and you have to find somewhere to change.”
Mourad survived thanks to the kindness and generosity of individuals and organisations. One organisation allowed him to shower and wash his clothes regularly.

Organise a collection
We distribute toiletry packs to our refugee friends once a month. The toiletry packs are welcomed by our friends and they are highly sought after. Toiletry packs include: shampoo, body wash, body lotion, deodorant, toothpaste, toothbrush and sanitary towels.
We would ask that all items should be new or as new. The best thing to do is ask yourself you would like to receive this or be happy to give this to a relative or friend? If not, then we would also prefer not to have them either. The message asylum seekers often receive in this country is that they are not wanted or are disregarded, so we work hard to make sure they feel just the opposite – special and welcome – when they come to JRS UK.
