Henry has been supported by JRS UK for the past two years. A man of deep faith, he enjoys participating in our drama and music groups, where he built strong friendships and strengthened his confidence and resilience.
Like many of the refugees we support, Henry has experienced the indignity of destitution. Deprived of the right to work and precluded from accessing benefits, he was left utterly destitute, reliant entirely on the kindness and generosity of others to meet his basic needs including food, shelter and access to healthcare.
“The toughest thing about being destitute?” Henry says, “Not having a place to shower or to clean your teeth or to take good care of yourself. It’s humiliating when you see someone, even a friend, turn away from you because you’ve not been able to wash yourself or your clothes in the last couple of days. It’s not easy.”
Being hosted through JRS’ At Home hosting scheme had a dramatic impact. Henry explains, “I had my own room, with my own shower – I could shower whenever I wanted! It made me feel that there are still good people out there. They showed me acceptance and love…unconditional love. I felt like a part of the family, I truly felt at home.”
Your donation this Advent will support JRS UK to accompany destitute asylum seekers and refugees like Henry in a spirit of hospitality and welcome.
“We became like brothers and sisters, cracking jokes and sharing stories.” Henry
