"...when my phone flashes with ‘JRS calling’, or I walk through the doors at JRS, the anxiety and loneliness begins to melt away."

A donation to the JRS Advent Appeal enables refugee friends to explore their creativity, and share this with others.
We rarely think about creative expression or joy when we think about ‘hardship’ support, or ‘destitution’. But this is exactly what the fun and varied refugee-led activities programme at JRS tries to give space to: the chance to share their talents and creativity, through drama, music, creative writing, knitting and sewing (to name a few!). These activities are full of fun and laughter, giving people some much needed respite from the stresses and anxieties they are facing. It’s this holistic approach to providing hardship support which makes a real difference to people’s lives, allowing people to Live in Limbo.
“JRS first helps you to feel safe and meet your basic needs; and then accompanies you to strive for more, to grow, thrive and play an active role in community.
“A few years ago, JRS supported me to take some courses in hospitality and Tour Guiding. Once I had finished the courses, I was able to begin volunteering in art galleries as a tour guide. I learnt so much doing this role, and it was a great opportunity to meet new people and practise my English.
“As my confidence increased, I took part in as many activities and events at JRS as possible: singing, acupuncture, drama, prayer groups advocacy groups, and creative groups – to name a few!”

“You rarely hear about ‘skilled’, ‘talented’, ‘intelligent’, ‘hardworking’ and ‘welcome’ connected to refugees and asylum seekers, but I know my peers and I have so much to contribute. JRS first helps you to feel safe and meet your basic needs; and then accompanies you to strive for more, to grow, thrive and play an active role in community.
“I really enjoy volunteering in art galleries now. Most people don’t know that I’m a refugee, and it doesn’t matter – what matters is that I can share my knowledge of the piece of art I’m guiding people to. Working alongside others, and being able to use my time well, really opens up my mind. It frees me from my troubles – just for a little while – and gives me hope for the future”.
Juliet shares the broader impact the JRS Hardship has had on her and her life.
A donation to the JRS Advent Appeal enables the JRS Hardship Fund to provide regular hardship support to over 300 refugee friends.
Refugee friends have extensive skills, talents and knowledge they are prevented from developing and using by being stuck in the asylum system for years and years.
But to use these skills and talents people first need a place to sleep, food in their stomachs, the freedom to make their own choices, and trust in the people around them.
JRS volunteers warmly welcome refugee friends to offer as much practical support as we can, with regular access to food, toiletries, warm clothes, phone top-ups and hardship money.
Every two weeks our Refugee Practical Support Coordinator, Sara, remotely top-ups over 300 refugee friends pre-paid contactless MasterCards with a £15 hardship grant – a real lifeline for many refugee friends, who have no other form of financial support.
“Receiving the £15 bi-weekly payment has been extremely valuable. With the bi-weekly payments, I am able to use the money to do my laundry and travel to places and appointments without the need of asking others for funds. I have no other financial recourse and it gives me a sense of financial empowerment.”
