Dear Yvette,
All of us deserve to live in safety and dignity. If we were ever forced to flee from our homes, we would want the opportunity to rebuild our lives safely elsewhere.
The recent violence against people of colour, members of the Muslim community, and people seeking sanctuary follows years of scapegoating and cruel policies.
Now is time for a different approach. In response to the riots, so many people are standing up for a compassionate society that welcomes people who been forced from their homes. This gives us hope, and is a clear indication that we can do better.
We’re calling on your government to play its part by:
- Take urgent steps to ensure the safety of everyone targeted by racist violence, including people in the asylum system, who in many cases have already fled violence and experienced profound trauma;
- Reject dehumanising and hostile rhetoric, which fuels disinformation and hostility;
- Repeal anti-refugee legislation and end the hostile environment and immigration detention; and
- Create safe routes for people seeking sanctuary, and fairly assess people’s asylum claims.
We are signing this petition because we stand with refugees and want to build a society that welcomes people who come here seeking safety.
