The Jesuit Refugee Service in the UK is recruiting for a new post of Legal Officer.
JRS is an international Catholic organisation, at work in 50 countries with a mission to accompany, serve and advocate on behalf of refugees and other forcibly displaced persons. Our work is founded on principles of Catholic Social Teaching and imbued with an Ignatian charism. In the UK, JRS’ work is focused on supporting destitute asylum seekers and those who are held in immigration detention. Our East London office is home to a variety of activities welcoming asylum seekers during the week as well as coordination of our work in detention, and we also run a hosting scheme with religious communities. We place a high value on hospitality and relationship. Our tightly knit team includes paid staff and volunteers of different ages, nationalities and backgrounds, including members of religious orders and refugees.
The Legal Project is an exciting new venture for JRS UK and the Legal Officer will play a key part in shaping the work. The Legal Officer is a full or part-time post on an 18 month contract, potentially renewable subject to funding. We are looking for an experienced and qualified immigration solicitor, barrister or advisor (accredited at IAAS level 2, Supervisor; or OISC level 3), dedicated to refugee protection and human rights, who is attracted to our mission, values and spirit. The Legal Officer will supervise a Legal Caseworker, and volunteers where appropriate.
The JRS UK Legal Project will seek to support asylum seekers to gain permission to stay in the UK through the provision of intensive support, research and case preparation, and close working relationships with other immigration law representatives. The project will benefit from the strong relationships that have been built with asylum seekers through the Day Centre, hosting scheme and other projects run by JRS UK. The Legal Project, in keeping with our ethos, will be personal and tailored to offer care to the individual.
As the project is new, the Legal Officer will need to be willing to work collaboratively with others in the team to set up the project, including necessary policies and standards. Once established, the Legal Project will also support and inform our advocacy and policy work on decision-making processes and refugee protection.
This role would suit an experienced immigration solicitor, barrister or advisor, who is looking to work intensively and thoroughly on cases as part of a team. They will need a flair for forming relationships in and out of the organisation, establishing trust with those we serve and inspiring confidence in legal aid practitioners externally secure onwards referral of cases. Salary: £31,000 to £36,0000 pa full time equivalent (or pro rata as appropriate), plus 10% contributory pension
Contract: fixed term contract, 18 months, potentially renewable
