As JRS UK’s Detention Outreach Manager, I see first-hand the difference that your support makes to the lives of people held in detention centres.

It is only because of you that we can run our advice services, advocate on behalf of vulnerable people, arrange legal representation, and draw attention to the horrors of immigration detention.

No one we meet has left their homes, families, and communities lightly. They are forced to do so because of harmful and often life-threatening situations. Yet, instead of finding safety, people seeking asylum face indefinite detention, unjust asylum processes, and even further trauma.

Through our work in detention centres and first-hand research, we see its devastating impact on people’s mental health, wellbeing, and dignity. Alarmingly, under ‘one-in-one-out’, a growing number of children are now being detained.

Every day, our team identifies children in detention and advocates on their behalf. With your help, more than 77 children were released from detention and are now on the road to rebuilding their lives.

But there are still many more people in detention who need our support. Every week, our team is encountering rising levels of overcrowding, poor access to healthcare, and a chronic lack of legal support.

With your help we will continue to challenge this inhumane system that keeps vulnerable children, women, and men held in detention indefinitely.   Because of people like you, who believe in a better way of treating people who come here in search of sanctuary, lives are being changed.
