At JRS UK, we know that stories hold immense power in shaping how we view the past, engage with the present, and envision the future. For far too long, the stories of Black communities have been told through lenses that misrepresent, oversimplify, or completely overlook the rich, multifaceted experiences of these communities. This has led to historical gaps, misunderstandings, and the erasure of critical contributions from Black people in all spheres of life.
The theme of this year’s Black History Month is Reclaiming Narratives. It is a call to action, a reminder that we have the power and responsibility to reshape the stories that define us. For us at JRS UK, this resonates deeply with our mission to accompany, serve, and advocate for people who have been marginalised This theme has a special resonance for us at JRS UK, as we counter everyday the dehumanising and hostile narratives often spread about people seeking sanctuary in the UK. We stand against these harmful portrayals, working alongside refugee friends to reclaim their stories, restore their dignity, and amplify their voices.
I appreciate this theme because, as someone working in the Communications team, I have the honour and privilege of hearing these powerful stories firsthand. It is a deeply meaningful part of my role to help actively champion these voices and share the experiences of refugee friends with the world, ensuring their truths are told and their humanity restored.
Throughout October, we will be sharing creative reflections on the theme of ‘Reclaiming Narratives’ from different members of the JRS UK family on our website and social media. We hope these contributions give you ample food for reflecting on the narratives we listen to and give voice to in our society. Stay tuned!
