Are you new to JRS UK? Have you seen us mentioned online or heard about us in your parish? Are you already a supporter of our work? Or have you always wanted to volunteer to support refugees, but not sure where to start? No matter who you are, for one special day our doors are open to everyone interested in our work and how we accompany, serve and advocate on behalf of refugees and those seeking asylum.
This Come and See event will be taking place on Saturday 5th October from 11:00 – 13:00 and members of the JRS team will be on hand to answer any of your questions. The day will give you a chance to come, see our centre in Wapping, meet our team and speak to other supporters and volunteers. The day will start with a short introduction to the mission and values of JRS and how we attend to the pastoral and practical needs of those held in immigration detention and who have been rendered destitute because of hostile environment policies.
There will then be the opportunity to meet members of staff and volunteers who work in the different teams that carry out the day-to-day work of JRS. This will give you the chance to explore in more detail how we accompany, serve and advocate on behalf of our refugee friends. This will allow you to find what particularly resonates with you and how you could support us or get involved in volunteering opportunities.
You will also be able to pick up one of our soon to be released Parish Packs at the event. The packs are designed to give you all the information you need to get your community taking practical action to support refugees who face hostility, destitution and detention here in the UK. We hope that those in attendance will be motivated go back to their parish communities and share the work and mission of JRS.
The different teams that make up JRS UK will be on hand to explain the work they do:
- The Detention Team – providing outreach services and pastoral support in immigration removal centres near Heathrow airport.
- The Destitution Services Team – including our day centre, refugee activities and our At Home hosting scheme.
- The Legal Team – Helping provide legal advice to our refugee friends.
- The Operations Team – Managing the day to day functioning of JRS UK.
- The Fundraising and Communications Team – including policy, advocacy and outreach.
Refreshments will be served on arrival and we look forward to meeting you soon!
