Find out more about hosting a refugee through ‘At Home’

On Thursday 7th October, JRS UK will be holding an evening for those who want to learn more about the At Home hosting scheme. The event will provide an opportunity to learn more about the project, for anybody to ask any questions they may have about hosting, and to hear from an experienced host who has welcomed several guests through At Home.

One of the greatest challenges faced by the refugees accompanied by JRS is lack of accommodation. Unable to rent property, destitute refugees must rely on friends or family to take them in, or else spend the night on public transport or sleeping on the streets. The JRS UK At Home hosting scheme organises short-term placements for refugees, providing a small amount of stability at an otherwise uncertain time. As the weather gets colder, the need for safe accommodation becomes even more desperate.

We will be joined by Rhiannon Prideaux, Accommodation and Emergency Response Manager, and Hannah Markay, Accommodation Officer, who manage the scheme and will explain the great need there is for hosting amongst our refugee friends. They will also go into detail about how the scheme works, particularly addressing the changes made to make the scheme COVID safe. We will be joined by current hosts who will share their experiences of providing hospitality to a refugee and share some top tips for beginning this exciting opportunity. ‘At Home’ has been an incredibly important support for many of our refugee friends and their perspectives will be shared.

This is an open information evening in which all questions about hosting are welcomed. If you have a spare room in London, if you would consider opening your home to provide a warm and welcoming environment to a destitute asylum seeker, or you just want to learn more about hosting, please do come along.

The meeting will run between 6:30 – 7:30 pm (arrivals from 6 pm) on Thursday 7th October at the Parish Hall of St Mary of the Angels Church, Moorhouse Rd, London W2 5DJ. Refreshments will be provided.

To RSVP, please email Nick: nick.hanrahan@jrs.net

We look forward to seeing you there!
