On Saturday 25th June, JRS invites you all to celebrate refugee week by joining us at our centre in Wapping for a vibrant creative textile workshop of exploring healing and belonging through creating flags.
Flags represent so many different things to different people – they can represent belonging to a nation, to a community, to a space, to a family.
On that day, we would like to come together to work on and share our own flags: individual works of art where everybody is welcome and free to express their voice and make a statement. Our aim is to create a sacred space by hanging the flags and making them come alive; by giving the flags a voice, a rhythm, or a poem.
This workshop will be led by Amanda Camenisch & Therese Westin from Singing Blankets, who have been working with JRS UK for the past year on a number of creative projects; alongside some refugee friends too. The workshop will involve creating textile artworks, using fabrics and paint with the option to either sew or glue materials together. We’ll also invite you to take part in musical explorations using your voice or instruments.
All activities are guided, no prior knowledge is needed. If you play an instrument and want to bring your instrument or if you want to bring your own materials for the textile artworks, you are very welcome to bring those along.
The workshop will be followed by a celebration, where we come together united as a group under the many flags, representing many voices. We will be making a collective statement by singing together for a state where we can all belong, where we can all be united, Songs for an imagined nation.
This event is in partnership with Singing Blankets
