When someone is rough sleeping or sofa surfing, basic tasks – such as washing clothes, cooking a healthy meal, or storing medication – become daily challenges.
Building social connections can also be difficult, and navigating the complex asylum system – attending appointments, making critical calls, or submitting documentation without a secure place to store essential records – can feel overwhelming.
The JRS UK Accommodation Project provides much-needed respite and stability so refugee friends can have the space to engage in addressing their needs including health and legal support, develop skills, and prepare towards their future.
All refugee friends in the Accommodation Project have access to our holistic support services. This includes casework and advice, activities at our centre, bi-weekly hardship grants, monthly phone top ups, and monthly visits to the JRS shop for food and toiletries.
It’s hard to explain how much your care and kindness means to me. Your support keeps people off the streets, keeps people sane, and helps people out of depression.
That’s why your kindness and compassion really count. I wish you could come to the JRS UK centre and see how your gift this Lent will help.
Shawn, Refugee friend
Hosting with JRS UK is a tangible, fulfilling and practical way to stand in solidarity with refugees and asylum seekers.
Through the At Home scheme, JRS UK coordinates and offers short-term placements for refugees, providing shelter, safety and stability at an otherwise difficult and uncertain time.
Our inspirational hosts welcome into their homes individuals who came to the UK in search of safety: providing shelter, treating them with dignity and care, and celebrating the gifts they bring.
JRS UK runs two houses: Emilie House and Amani House, where refugee friends can live independently and at the same time cultivate community.
I’m now living at Emilie House, JRS UK’s house for refugee women. I was nervous about living in a shared house at first, but I have really enjoyed the community. I love learning about other people’s countries and trying their foods.
When you are sofa surfing, you don’t have any control over your time or any personal space, so it’s hard to rest properly. Even when you’re trying to sleep, you’re worrying about when you’ll have to wake up and clear out.
Now that I have a space of my own, I can control my time. I have started to feel like I can build myself up again, like there is a light in my life.
