Find out all you need to know about our Accompaniment in Action series.
Welcome to our monthly series known as Accompaniment in Action which will see us take a closer look at the various ways that JRS accompanies our refugee friends and they us. We will be speaking to members of staff, volunteers and hear from our refugee friends.
Accompaniment is very much the bedrock of all we do at JRS UK and we are excited to be able to share with you the way this impacts our various projects. Below you will find details of for any upcoming events and recordings of past events so you can catch up on any you have missed.
March’s event focused on the barriers our refugee friends encounter when attempting to access healthcare and some of the work that JRS UK have done to support people during the pandemic. Sarah Teather, our Director, was joined by Sophie Cartwright, our Policy Officer, Mohamed, one of our refugee friends and some of those we have worked closely with to help support our friends to access healthcare.

Our first Accompaniment in Action event of 2021 was a showcase of some of the different activity groups run by the Jesuit Refugee Service UK, including a performance by the JRS UK Hopes and Dreams drama group and a closer look at the Spoken Pictures photography sessions. As well as seeing some of what the different activity groups had been doing, we heard from some of our refugee friends about what makes taking part in the activities so important.

For the second of our Accompaniment in Action events, we were joined by Michael Tarnoky, our Senior Legal Officer, and Bernadette Smith, our Legal Caseworker, as we discussed the asylum system here in the UK. We talked about how the system works, some of the difficulties our friends face when going through it and took questions those in attendance had about the process of seeking safety in the UK.

In June, JRS UK released its latest report Detained and Dehumanised: The Impact of Immigration Detention. In this event we heard from Sophie Cartwright, JRS UK’s Policy Officer, and William Neal, JRS UK’s Detention Outreach Officer, as they discussed the report and shared some of the experiences of the refugee friends who have been detained. They shed some light on the incredibly damaging effects of indefinite detention which so often go unreported.
